    Free Patterns FAQ

The patterns are free because we want to encourage growth in the hobby. By making more patterns available, we have more like-minded people enjoying the world of knitting and crochet! If you are interested in contributing to our pattern library with your very own design, let us know!

Generally speaking, crocheting is easier than knitting. Crochet uses a single hook compared to two needles used in knitting. This significant difference makes crochet easier to manage in the beginning than knitting. For beginners that are interested in convenience, we suggest crochet. The techniques and tools used are minimized and, therefore, slightly more accessible.

Scarves are what most knitters have started with in the past. Typically, scarves are straight, so there is no need to deal with any increases or decreases. However, a scarf can become pretty long, so we suggest a little pot holder if you want a quick project.

The garter stitch is the very first stitch you learn when starting with knitting. It is one of the easiest stitches to knit and is usually the stitch that beginner knitters learn first. Garter stitch is knitting in which all rows are knitted in knit (plain) stitch rather than alternating with purl rows. It is formed by doing a knit stitch into every stitch on every row. The garter stitch forms a neat pattern of horizontal ridges formed by the tops of the knitted stitches on every second row.

The stockinette stitch is one of the first stitches beginners learn after the garter stitch. To work the stockinette stitch in flat rows, knit one row, purl the next row, and then repeat. This creates a 'braided' look on the right side and a 'wave' look of rows on the wrong side.
