Shop mohair yarn at Apricot Yarn & Supply. Choose from a wide selection of brands, fiber, weights, and colors for knitting, crochet, and weaving projects.
Mohair originates from the mohair goat and is a long, wiry fiber. Mohair is most known for the halo it creates. Mohair fiber graded with Super Kid Mohair is the finest, softest version of this fiber. If the fiber is listed as mohair only, it will tend to be more coarse. Usually, mohair is blended with other fibers such as silk and wool. Lace weight Mohair yarn can be added to almost any project you like without changing the gauge much. It adds a halo that has been on trend for a couple of years now.
Mohair yarn can come in different weights. The most common are lace and worsted. The mohair yarns tend to look much finer than comparable wool or cotton yarn. The mohair fiber is very wiry and straight. It tends to fill up space between stitches, creating a very light, open fabric.
Adding mohair or knitting with multiple strands of mohair alone is trending right now. You can find many projects that call for adding one strand or more of mohair for sweaters, shawls, and hats. The addition of mohair adds texture and depth to the item you are creating. Mohair is also very sticky and can be challenging to unknit or pull out if you need to correct a mistake. As with all animal fibers, mohair is trimmed from the animal regularly and does not harm the animal.
Is mohair itchy to wear? Mohair is graded by the diameter of the fiber, just like wool. The finer grade mohair is significantly softer than others. Superfine kid mohair is one of the softest grades of mohair. Like each fiber, each individual has different tolerances for the fiber.
What do you use mohair yarn for? Currently, mohair is added to many cold-weather garments such as sweaters and hats to create a “halo.” The mohair fiber stands out from the garment and pushes against the stitches. This makes a light fabric with a looser gauge while still being warm.
Mohair is described as sticky and can be challenging to pull out mistakes if you have to back out your stitches. Knitting a strand of mohair along with another strand of yarn helps ease knitting with mohair if you find it difficult.
Mohair is trimmed or combed from the goats. It does not harm the animal to harvest the fiber.
Kid mohair describes how fine the fiber is. Kid Mohair is softer than Mohair, while Super Kid Mohair is one of the softest of this fiber.
Many patterns call for one strand of mohair and one strand of another fiber to be held together while knitting. Knitting with mohair is done just like knitting with any other yarn.
