Alpaca fiber originates from the high mountains of South America and has been used for thousands of years to keep people warm.
Shop alpaca yarn at Apricot Yarn & Supply. Choose from a wide selection of brands, fiber, weights, and colors for knitting, crochet, and weaving projects.
Alpaca yarn can be knit just like yarns of other fibers. A tighter gauge can be used with alpaca to lend structure and balance the drape this fiber creates naturally. See our curated collection of alpaca knitting yarn!
Typically Alpaca has not been treated with a superwash process, which can be washed in a machine cycle. Items knit or crocheted with Alpaca yarn should be hand washed in cool water or dry cleaned. Do not wring items. Roll in a dry towel and press down to remove excess water. Shape and lay flat to dry.
Alpaca yarn tends to have a lot of drape because of the straight nature of the fiber itself. Knitting at a tighter gauge can create more structure for finished items, and your options are endless as to what the fiber can be used for. From rugs to soft baby garments, alpaca can be used.
Alpaca yarn can be used to knit any garment. Alpaca is great for shawls and scarves as well as sweaters and tops. Alpaca fiber is very warm by weight; it is considered warmer than wool. Many people enjoy wearing socks made from alpaca because they are so warm. Cold weather items would be excellent choices for alpaca yarn. Alpaca fiber is straight and silky, so it can create a beautiful drape in a garment such as a shawl or a sweater.
Alpaca fiber has a hollow core, making it light but very warm. By weight, alpaca is warmer than wool.
Alpaca does not have the same elasticity as wool, so knitting at a tighter gauge can help maintain the shape of the item. Unlike wool, alpaca fiber does not contain lanolin, which irritates those sensitive to wool. If you are sensitive to wool, you can try alpaca yarn for cold-weather items such as scarves, hats, and sweaters.

Alpaca yarn is more water repellant than wool, making it a fabulous crochet yarn for outdoor accessories used during cold months or wet weather. However, alpaca is a strong fiber that doesn't have as much elasticity as wool, so the garment tends to "grow" or stretch after finishing your project. It's also important to note that, unlike wool, 100% Alpaca yarn does not shrink back into place when washed. Shop our collection of alpaca yarn for crochet!
