  • LEARN TO KNIT (BEGINNERS)

  • LEARN TO CROCHET (BEGINNERS)

  • Apricot Yarn & Supply began with a simple memory: a sunlit kitchen, rows of homemade apricot jam, and the feeling that making something by hand could be both grounding and joyful. That spirit of care, creativity, and connection still shapes everything we do today.

A Lifelong Maker at the Helm

I first learned to knit when I was twelve. My very first attempt was a wonky little rectangle, full of character and more than a few holes. Years later, while expecting my first daughter, I picked up the needles again and rediscovered the calm and satisfaction that comes from making something stitch by stitch. I have now been knitting and crocheting for more than 25 years.

My background is in fine art. I earned a B.A. in Fine Art with an emphasis in painting, and that training shapes how I think about color, texture, materials, and design every day. I do not have a certificate in fiber arts, and I have never needed one. My expertise has been built the way most lasting skills are: hands on, project by project, by helping makers solve real problems at the shop.

    Expertise You Can Rely On

The question we answer most often for experienced knitters and crocheters is yarn substitution. When a pattern calls for a yarn that is discontinued or that we do not carry, we help you find the right replacement, matching fiber, weight, and yardage so your finished piece turns out the way the designer intended. We use trusted resources like Ravelry to confirm fiber content, weight, and recommended needle size, then do the yardage math with you so you know exactly how much to buy.

Beyond substitution, we regularly help with:

    • Pattern reading and technique questions

    • Top-down and bottom-up sweater construction

    • Chart reading for colorwork, lace, and crochet

    • Choosing among natural fibers including wool, mohair, alpaca, cotton, and linen

Whether you are casting on your first project or troubleshooting your tenth sweater, our goal is the same: help you move forward with confidence.

    A Team of Knowledgeable Makers

You will not just find help when I am in the shop. Apricot Yarn & Supply is staffed by a team of experienced makers, and nearly everyone here can guide you through yarn substitution, tool selection, and everyday project questions. We provide a staff full of problem solvers, people who are well versed in knitting and crochet to help you through your project and teach you how to do the next steps.

    Thoughtfully Curated, Natural Fiber First

We curate our shelves with intention. Apricot Yarn & Supply is the only shop in the county to focus on natural fibers, keeping any manmade content to a maximum of 25 percent in the yarns we carry. When we choose a brand, we look for fiber quality, brand integrity, strong pattern support, and values we believe in, including fair trade, women owned, organic, animal welfare, and GOTS certified sources.

We are proud of our local roots, too. Since 2018, Seven Oaks Ranch, a local ranch in our community, has supplied us with locally grown alpaca and merino wool yarn. And because good yarn deserves a good start, we offer free yarn winding on any yarn that needs it before you cast on.

    Rooted in Our Community

For more than eight years, Apricot Yarn & Supply has been a gathering place for fiber artists in San Diego. You will find us in the Arts District at Liberty Station, and you are always welcome to join us for Social Stitch, our open crafting time every Wednesday and on the first Friday evening of each month. We have been part of the San Diego Yarn Crawl since 2018, and for the past two years we have partnered with the San Diego Craft Collective for their Fiber Fest event at Liberty Station.

    What We Believe

    • Craft as connection: Making by hand slows us down and brings us together.

    • Quality over quantity: We choose yarns and tools with intention, materials that respect both the maker and the work.

    • Learning as a lifelong journey: Classes, conversations, and everyday guidance are at the heart of who we are, and our classes focus on building real skills, not just finishing a single project.

    • Community first: We greet everyone who walks through the door, ask how we can help, and want every visit to end better than it started. Kindness, and an easy returns policy, are simply how we do things.

We also believe that everyone can learn to knit or crochet, and that we all make mistakes. With a little experience, and a little help, you get better at fixing them.

    Where We Are Today

Apricot Yarn & Supply has grown into a trusted fiber arts hub in San Diego, offering thoughtfully curated natural fiber yarns, specialty tools, welcoming classes, and a warm, creative space for knitters and crocheters of every level. Every project begins with a story. This shop is ours, and we are honored to be part of yours.
