    About this yarn

Baah Yarn La Jolla is one of our shop favorites, named for the beach town just up the coast from us! Use these luxurious hand-dyed skeins made from 100% superwash merino for soft, smooth, and lightweight projects such as shawls, scarves, and sweaters.

We always have several shawls on display made from Baah La Jolla. Right now, since our Beach Cottage Shawl colorway is coming back for San Diego Yarn Crawl 2026, we’re featuring the Beach Cottage Shawl, one of last year’s San Diego Yarn Crawl pattern releases.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions? Visit our contact page and we will help you choose.

Do I need to alternate skeins with a hand dyed yarn?

Hand-dyed yarn is often dyed in small batches, and beautifully unique in that no two skeins are exactly alike. With hand dyed skeins, it’s best to work with the same lot for your entire project if possible, buying enough yarn at the start to avoid losing yarn chicken! If you are unable to find enough yarn from the same lot in one go, alternating between skeins as you switch from one lot to another can help blend the color transition more smoothly.

    What does superwash mean here?

Superwash wool has been treated, either with extra physical or chemical washing, to remove many of the microscopic barbs naturally present in each hair of wool fiber. As a result, superwash wool does not felt or shrink as readily as untreated wool, and often feels smoother. This yarn is only partially made up of superwash wool, so we recommend hand washing in cool water to prevent any unwanted warping of the fabric!

When you use a machine to wash items made from 100% superwash wool, use a gentle cycle and cold water for the lowest risk of unwanted shrinkage, to be safe. Superwash wool is better at resisting felting, but not always immune to it, so we recommend laying your superwash wool pieces flat to dry.

Why is it called La Jolla?

Mira Cole, owner and founder of Baah Yarn, named La Jolla after the beautiful beach town about twenty minutes north of the shop. Mira started hand-dying yarn in her kitchen in Oceanside, CA, and La Jolla was the first line she created for Baah Yarn, something joyful to knit with. She continues to be a friend of the shop from her new headquarters in Las Vegas, NV!

How much yarn do I need?

Referencing your pattern and your desired size & gauge is the best way to ensure you will have enough yarn! Many shawls can be made from one to two skeins. Sara’s Una Kerchief is a great single skein project.

We always recommend Ravelry as an all-encompassing pattern database in the shop. Many patterns on Ravelry estimate the yarn amount you will need for the size you are looking to make, but at Apricot Yarn & Supply, we can always offer advice if your pattern is unclear, you are working freehand, or something else!
