Shop silk yarn at Apricot Yarn & Supply. Choose from a wide selection of brands, fiber, weights, and colors for knitting, crochet, and weaving projects.
Silk yarn is made from the cocoons of the silk moth. Silk is known for its drape, luster, and beautiful depth of color. Silk or silk blend yarns are drapey and smooth. Silk is very warm and insulating, but similar to wool is also very breathable. Silk wool blends are lovely for cold weather, and silk; cotton blends can create wonderful warm weather pieces such as tops and neckwear.
Silk comes from the cocoon fiber of silk moths. Silkworm farming is a practice that has been around for over 5,000 years.
Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers. Silk yarn tends to be smooth and has a sheen. The fabric of 100% silk garments or neckwear tends to lengthen while wearing because of the extremely smooth nature of the silk fiber. Using a tighter gauge or a silk blend yarn will reduce the stretching and help the item stay in its original shape.
Mulberry silk refers to the diet of the moths, who have only been fed Mulberry leaves, which creates high-quality silk.
Tussah silk refers to the method of harvesting silk. Tussah silk is collected in the wild in the forests of India and South Asia. The moths are allowed to emerge from the cocoon before the fiber processing begins. The Tussah silk is golden-colored and tends to be more textured.
You can knit garments and scarves from silk yarn. The silk fabric is drapey and smooth. Items that would benefit from this flowy fabric are great for silk yarn.
Silk yarn is strong but more delicate than plant-based fibers such as cotton or linen.
I enjoyed working with this Malabrigo yarn. I crocheted a beanie as requested by my granddaughter. I normally knit but this was a special request. The cap turned out beautiful, comfy and feels wonderful.
I’m using this yarn for the American afghan pattern. It’s perfect for this project.
I have several Lykke small circulars as well as both the 3” and 5or 6 inch tip interchangeable Lykke sets. I love how much easier wood needles are on my hands when knitting…except for sticky yarns and then I have to switch to my metal Chiaogoo needles. I’m about to start a two color brioche class to learn brioche knitting and the yarn is superwash Merino (perfect wood needle yarn) and the two patterns call for 9” circs plus a larger circ (I have the larger in my Lykke sets) and double pointed needles. I don’t have any Lykke DPNs so I ordered the 9” circ and the DPNs in the “supposed” size will need. Let’s hope I get gauge on them or I’ll be buying one more size up or down, right?
I’m giving 5 stars ahead of time then, because I love all my other Lykke’s and I use them for everything but my Shetland wool yarns. I highly recommend the sets. You can get extra cords in any length to use with them. I have the two sets because I often have more than one project going needing the same size needle although I’ve also bought extra tips in my most used sizes. I tend to gravitate to the 3” tips most often.
Great
EXCELLENT MATERIAL!
