Shop cotton yarn at Apricot Yarn & Supply. Choose from a wide selection of brands, fiber, weights, and colors for knitting, crochet, and weaving projects.
Cotton yarn is a plant-based fiber that is grown all over the world. Because it is hypoallergenic and vegan, many people prefer to use cotton fiber in knitting, weaving, and crochet. Cotton is washable and long-lasting. It is soft against the skin and makes an excellent choice for baby garments, sweaters, and durable items like bags, hand towels, washcloths, and blankets. Cotton feels cooler to the touch than wool, and many prefer to wear cotton in the warmer months of the year. Mako cotton from Israel, and Pima cotton from Peru, make some of the softest cotton yarn on the market.
Cotton is excellent for knitting and crochet, as the fiber gives you the option to produce very tight fabric or work at a loose gauge to make it more open.
Cotton yarn is strong and hard to break, making it a long-lasting and durable fiber option. This makes cotton great for hardwearing items like wash or dish clothes, blankets, bags, or baby items. Cotton can be washed and dried by machine over and over.
Cotton fiber is smooth, so it feels soft against the skin and rarely causes irritation. High-quality cotton is never coarse or scratchy. Sometimes, cotton can become stiff with wash and wear, so choose high-quality cotton for those items you are making that will be worn against the skin. Pima cotton and Israeli Maku cotton are some of the softest cotton fibers available. Pima cotton is higher-end cotton with a longer fiber than conventional cotton. It has a reputation for producing a smooth fabric that's soft to the touch, wrinkle-resistant, and ultra-durable.
Cotton production is water-intensive and can use many chemicals when harvesting cotton. We recommend opting for organic cotton produced without harmful herbicides and more sustainable land management practices. Also, look for GOTS certification to find yarn qualified as having no residual chemicals and cleaner production.
Cotton yarn works great for kitchen items because it is absorbent and does not melt, unlike acrylic. Cotton also has a high smoke point, so it is safer around open flame than wool or acrylic.
Mercerized cotton yarn is cotton that has been spun and treated not to shrink when washed and dried. Mercerized cotton tends to be stiffer and has a sheen; it is great for items that need to be sturdy and will be washed often.
A cotton blend is a fiber/fabric made with cotton and contains other fibers in an equal or smaller amount. A cotton blend yarn has a higher amount of cotton fibers and a small number of different fibers such as wool, silk, linen, polyester, rayon, bamboo, and others. Blending fibers adds unique qualities to fabric, such as durability, elasticity or breathability.
100% cotton knits can lose shape more easily than other fibers such as wool. Blending other fibers with cotton can add the qualities of the other fiber. Wool can add elasticity, silk or viscose adds shine and drape. We love cotton blends for warmer weather garments, easy care items such as blankets or baby items, and the softness cotton has next to your skin.
I enjoyed working with this Malabrigo yarn. I crocheted a beanie as requested by my granddaughter. I normally knit but this was a special request. The cap turned out beautiful, comfy and feels wonderful.
I’m using this yarn for the American afghan pattern. It’s perfect for this project.
I have several Lykke small circulars as well as both the 3” and 5or 6 inch tip interchangeable Lykke sets. I love how much easier wood needles are on my hands when knitting…except for sticky yarns and then I have to switch to my metal Chiaogoo needles. I’m about to start a two color brioche class to learn brioche knitting and the yarn is superwash Merino (perfect wood needle yarn) and the two patterns call for 9” circs plus a larger circ (I have the larger in my Lykke sets) and double pointed needles. I don’t have any Lykke DPNs so I ordered the 9” circ and the DPNs in the “supposed” size will need. Let’s hope I get gauge on them or I’ll be buying one more size up or down, right?
I’m giving 5 stars ahead of time then, because I love all my other Lykke’s and I use them for everything but my Shetland wool yarns. I highly recommend the sets. You can get extra cords in any length to use with them. I have the two sets because I often have more than one project going needing the same size needle although I’ve also bought extra tips in my most used sizes. I tend to gravitate to the 3” tips most often.
Great
EXCELLENT MATERIAL!
