Daruma Sasawashi is a washi paper yarn made in Japan from Kumasasa, a variety of bamboo grass that grows around 1,000 meters above sea level. Kumasasa is naturally antibacterial and deodorizing and offers protection from UV rays, which makes Sasawashi especially well suited for summer accessories like a crochet hat or a clutch. It has also been treated with water-proofing, a finish that will gradually fade over time.
Sasawashi is the perfect choice for structured accessories like the CAMBODIA Hat by Susanne Müller, which you may have seen in the shop as a sample, or a satchel bag like the Konoha Bag by Nahoko Masubuchi. For more from this Japanese brand, see our Daruma Collection.
Orders ship in 2 to 3 business days. Shipping is free on orders of $75 or more within the U.S.
This looks like just what I need for a ply splitting experiment.
I gave it four stars for how tricky the yarn can be. For people experienced enough how to handle yarns, it’s not a problem. It’s lovely to touch for me. It creates a nice stiff fabric perfect for small baskets, bags and place mats, etc. I wouldn’t wear it though. Very nicely made yarn. Washing will make it softer.
Crochets up nicely and wasn’t too much resistance for my hands.

Sasawashi is made in Japan by weaving Kumasasa bamboo grass into washi paper, which is then dyed and spun into a yarn strand. The name combines “Sasa” from Kumasasa and “washi” from the washi style paper! During the dyeing process, the washi paper receives a water-repellent and stain-resistant sheen, which helps it stay clean.
Daruma suggests a D to G hook (3.25 to 4 mm), with a gauge range of 16 to 18 double crochet stitches and 6 to 7 rows in 4 inches (10 cm). Look for a pattern that falls within the recommended range for best results!
Yes! This yarn has a stiffer structure and light water-proofing finish, spun from kumasasa bamboo which is naturally antibacterial, deodorizing, and UV-protective. We recommend it frequently for sun hats and bags that need structure.
The water-repellent and stain-resistant washi paper in this yarn shouldn’t require frequent wash. If you do wash your piece, spot treat or hand wash in cool water, reshape as you like, and lay flat to dry.
Referencing your pattern and your desired size & gauge is the best way to ensure you will have enough yarn! Crocheting a large size of the CAMBODIA Hat by Susanne Müller requires four skeins of Sasawashi. If you’d like to recreate the contrast brim style we have in the shop as a sample, three skeins of your main color and one skein of a contrast color.
We always recommend Ravelry as an all-encompassing pattern database in the shop. Many patterns on Ravelry estimate the yarn amount you will need for the size you are looking to make, but at Apricot Yarn & Supply, we can always offer advice if your pattern is unclear, you are working freehand, or something else!
