    About this yarn

    BC Garn Alba is a 100% organic cotton, GOTS certified, fingering weight cotton. The cotton is combed before spinning, Its smooth-combed surface makes it soft and gentle enough for babywear. Perfect for lighter pieces and for anyone who finds wool scratchy.

    Held double, Alba works great in one of our shop samples, the Cloud Top by Petiteknit. For a lighter weight top, try a Breezy top by kisskiss.rhinestones.

    What does GOTS certified actually mean?

    GOTS is the Global Organic Textile Standard, and it covers more than just how the cotton was grown. It sets rules for the whole chain, from the fiber through the spinning and dyeing, including which chemicals can be used and the working conditions in the mills. So a GOTS certified yarn is making a claim about the whole process, not only the field it came from.

    Is it soft enough for a baby?

    Yes! Alba is very smooth, combed before spinning to remove shorter cotton fibers, which leaves behind a great feeling strand. It is a good choice for babywear or wool-sensitive skin, but can also be a great option for small amigurumi or projects that require structure.

    Can I machine wash it?

    Yes! Like in your favorite cotton tee, a cotton fabric knit or crocheted with BC Garn Alba can shrink slightly on its first wash in warm water or its first time in the dryer, but not unpredictably so. If you’d like your project to stick to an exact measurement, we recommend blocking and laying your project flat to dry.

    What is it best for?

    We recommend warm weather garments, light layers, and baby knits.

    How much yarn do I need?

    Referencing your pattern and your desired size & gauge is the best way to ensure you will have enough yarn! For a general example, knitting a pair of Vanilla Bean Socks by Crazy Sock Lady Designs calls for 400 - 463yd of a fingering weight yarn. Three skeins should be enough for all three sizes.
