    About this yarn

Kelbourne Woolens Perennial is a light fingering weight, ultra-soft blend of superwash merino, suri alpaca, and nylon. Its tight twist and smooth fibers make for an incredibly smooth handfeel, and the extra structural support from 15% nylon makes it a great candidate for soft knit socks that can stand the test of time. The bright color palette from Kelbourne Woolens is a shop favorite. If you’re interested in colorwork using Perennial, we also carry Perennial Minis from Kelbourne Woolens, smaller skeins in the same palette that are the perfect mini skeins for colorwork or a contrast heel, toe, and cuff.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions? Visit our contact page and we will help you choose.

What can I make with Kelbourne Woolens Perennial?

Kelbourne Woolens Perennial is the suggested yarn for these Cozy Waffle Socks. The optional pop of color on the contrast heel and toe is the perfect place to use Perennial Minis.

Roxborough Dolman by Courtney Kelley is a stylish and slouchy striped top that calls for Kelbourne Woolens Perennial.

This Fashionista can be worn as a headband, scarf, belt, or even an ascot! uses Kelbourne Woolens Perennial in the perfect Barbie pink (aka 685 Pink)!

What weight yarn is best for socks, and how much do I need?

Fingering weight is also called sock weight, because it is the most often used for traditional socks! Referencing your pattern and your desired size & gauge is the best way to ensure you will have enough yarn, but 1 skein, or 490yd, is enough for a pair of crew length socks for most foot sizes.

Typically, a 100g skein of fingering weight yarn has around 400yd. Kelbourne Woolens Perennial is a light fingering weight yarn, so it includes a bit more at 490yd.

What does superwash mean, and can I machine wash it?

Superwash wool has been treated, either with extra physical or chemical washing, to remove many of the microscopic barbs naturally present in each hair of wool fiber. As a result, superwash wool does not felt or shrink as readily as untreated wool, and often feels smoother. This yarn is only partially made up of superwash wool, so we recommend hand washing in cool water to prevent any unwanted warping of the fabric!

When you use a machine to wash items made from 100% superwash wool, use a gentle cycle and cold water for the lowest risk of unwanted shrinkage, to be safe. Superwash wool is better at resisting felting, but not always immune to it, so we recommend laying your superwash wool pieces flat to dry.

Why alpaca and merino together for socks?

We find that including both alpaca and superwash merino makes this yarn incredibly soft. If you want an extra luxurious pair of socks, try making them with Perennial!
